Read moreOur April member highlight features Erik, a dedicated student, teacher, grappler, and runner. Erik embodies the principles of judo through his teaching and his learning. He is a strong addition to the Kano MA team. I began training at Kano Martial Arts the very first day the doors opened. Upon arriving I was greeted and embraced by Sensei Garry and from that moment I knew Kano was to become my permanent home. I had been training Judo for over a year and training Jiu Jiu Jitsu for about five years. When I heard that Sensei Garry and Sensei Shintaro were opening an academy I knew this was the opportunity for me to really sharpen my learning. The experience has impacted my approach ....
Read moreAt Kano Martial Arts, we are proud of the diversity of our community of members who come from all walks of life. This month, it is only fitting that we feature Korina for our March Member Highlight. Korina is a dedicated judoka, nurse, and mother. She demonstrates the spirit of judo in more ways than one. At the moment, she is fighting the coronavirus outbreak on the frontlines. We can only imagine that she shows her patients and coworkers in the hospital the amount of focus, determination, and kindness she shows her peers and coaches in the dojo. Here’s a note from Korina: Currently, I’m an RN on the frontlines of the COVID19 pandemic. I can’t wait until we ....
Read moreFeb. 2020 Member Highlight with Isidora Isidora is a brown belt who joined the Kano MA family since our opening in June of last year. Isidora has been an integral part of our community. For our first member highlight, we asked her a few questions about her experience on the mats so far. How was your experience transitioning from doing Judo in California to doing it in NYC at Kano? Within a few weeks of training at Kano, I felt that the knowledge I developed training in San Francisco was getting more refined with each class. Both Sensei Garry and Sensei Shintaro have a way of explaining techniques and strategies that will genuinely take your judo to another level, once ....

Read moreI wish I could give this place 10 stars. A beautiful, clean, and spacious facility. Convenient class times in mornings, afternoons, evenings. Most importantly, the instructors are world-class, extremely talented and truly care about the students. They have a deep knowledge of their art, and take the time to patiently teach the smallest details. You will feel welcome here regardless of your experience level with martial arts. Come try out — you will learn a lot.
If you're looking to train Judo because you've always been interested it it or martial arts, THIS IS THE PLACE!
If you're looking for a place that will get you ready to compete in Judo tournaments, this is the place.
If you're a BJJer that is looking to build a stand-up game that is deeper than double leg or pulling guard, this is the place.
There's also wrestling, from the NYU assistant wrestling coach, which was definitely a change of pace for me, and has taught me some interesting drills and techniques.
How good is this place? People training to make the Olympics are stopping by on occasion. Quality knows quality. This is definitely a place for hard training.
Also, the location is very convenient to the ACE/123/FM lines.
Best Judo in NYC!
